Málaga CF wins prestigious Under-17’s international tournament in France
The Málaga CF youth team won the prestigious international tournament, underway since last Saturday in Lille. The Blue and Whites defeated Belgium team Bruges on penalties, after the score was 0-0 at full time.
The Málaga side performed brilliantly throughout the tournament, which included teams such as Juventus, Red Star and Porto, and teams they previously defeated including Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon.
The Blue and Whites played excellent football in the group stage, defeating French team Auxerre by 4-0, and Poland’s Lech Poznan by 2-0 on Saturday. They faced Italian side Torino in the quarter final on Sunday. With a score of 0-0 after 40 minutes, as the final whistle blew, the match went to penalties. Málaga defeated Torino by 4-3, to proceed to the semi-final.
Monday’s semi-final match against Porto was a passionate encounter for both teams. With another draw of 1-1 at the end of normal time, the match was again to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. The Blue and Whites were victorious by 4-2, to reach the final.
On Monday afternoon Málaga faced Bruges, who’d also had a fantastic tournament, in the grand final. Málaga’s success in penalty shoot-outs had seen them progress in the competition, and again the final was no different. After 40 minutes the score was 0-0, and penalties were to decide the winner. Málaga overcame their nerves to return to La Rosaleda as winners of the international tournament.
