La Rosaleda to pay tribute to ‘Muy Hospitalaria Ciudad de Málaga’

Málaga–Zaragoza, taking place on Monday 8th December, will serve as the stage for a major tribute by the Club to the people of Málaga who rescued the shipwrecked crew of the Gneisenau 125 years ago, as well as a remembrance of its victims. This heroic act earned Málaga the honorary title of ‘Muy Hospitalaria’ (‘Very Hospitable’).

On 16th December 1900, the Gneisenau, a German military training ship, sank off the coast of Málaga. The people of Málaga rushed to its rescue, risking their own lives. After this episode, the extraordinary relationship between the people of Málaga and Germany was strengthened, a bond that dates back several centuries through the trade of wine and Málaga’s traditional raisins.

125 years later, Málaga CF wishes to join the tributes planned across the city, dedicating the match against Real Zaragoza on 8th December at 20:30, LALIGA HYPERMOTION matchday 17, to this heroic feat.

For this reason, Málaga CF will play in their away kit. The black uniform features a diagonal green and purple stripe across the front of the shirt, representing the colours of the City of Málaga flag. Additionally, as a special edition, the shirt will include a chest print with the motto ‘MUY HOSPITALARIA CIUDAD DE MÁLAGA.’ This title was awarded to the capital of the Costa del Sol in recognition of the Gneisenau rescue.

The team captain will wear a special armband created for the occasion by the renowned Málaga artist José Luis Puche, the talented designer behind the armbands Málaga CF has presented from municipalities across Málaga province over the past three seasons.

In addition, the Palco de Honor will host representatives from the German consulate, the German Business Association of Andalusia (Deutsches Wirtschaftsforum Andalusien), and descendants of the Malagueños who rescued the ship’s crew. Boys and girls from the German School of Málaga will serve as escort kids, accompanying the team onto the pitch.

A true tribute to the brave and compassionate people of Málaga.
