Kilometre 30: Málaga-Tenerife

Málaga claimed a point at home against CD Tenerife, a tough rival who made things very difficult for Sergio Pellicer’s men.

There were numerous highlights from #MálagaTenerife that we look at here in our kilometre:

The spring of Peiró

“When spring comes, we’ll see”, as Joaquín Peiró used to answer the classic question from journalists as to the team’s objectives for the season.  The run-up to play featured the unveiling of ‘his’ bench, the local dugout at La Rosaleda, a year after he passed away. For many, he was the best Blue and White coach in history, and he’s now eternal at the stadium and has been since the start of the spring season, which got underway last weekend.

Actions in both areas

Two momentous actions sealed the match. The first, in favour of the home side, perfectly symbolises part of the attacking mechanism we’ve seen in recent matches. A pass to Jozabed’s space, Jairo appears on the wing to assist and Luis Muñoz, coming in like a truck, finishes in tandem with a rival defender to net the 1-0. The second unfortunately, was a leveller from Folch in an evidently dangerous action in Juan Soriano’s area. Neither the referee nor the VAR interpreted the action as a foul that, in the other League, would have meant two more points for Málaga.

Scepovic’s debut

Stefan made his Malaguista debut in the closing stages of play, substituting a fatigued Caye Quintana on the attack. There was no time to show his qualities as a benchmark striker, but he accumulated his first minutes of play. He is player number 389 to don the Málaga CF jersey in an official match.

+11

Eleven are the victories (and defeats) for Málaga CF in LaLiga SmartBank after 30 matches. And 11 are the points above the drop zone with 12 games remaining until the end of the season. In a relatively comfortable position in the standings, eight points away from sixth place, Pellicer’s men have won seven out of the last nine points at stake. Remarkable, to say the least.
