Kilometre 11: Málaga-Lugo

Málaga CF returned to winning ways at home in LaLiga SmartBank. The first home win this 22/23 season, featuring homegrown goals and that of the legend, Rubén Castro.

There were numerous highlights from Málaga CF’s 3-2 win against CD Lugo at La Rosaleda. We take a look back in our classic kilometre:

‘Telmo’ Castro

Every match where Rubén Castro scores makes the news. Either for longevity or for stats, a goal from Castro is already an event in itself. Not forgetting his two assists against Lugo, the 1-0 and the 3-0, proving that he’s much more than a 'killer'. His goal, the 2-0, was preceded by exquisite, well-positioned control. It was the 281st goal of his career between the First and Second Divisions, matching Telmo Zarra and placing himself just three goals away from Quini, Spain’s historical top scorer counting both categories and in the Top 3 after Messi and Cristiano.

Marbella Talent Show

Two homegrown Marbella-born players will never forget #MálagaLugo. On the one hand, Cristian, a Malagueño left-winger, made his debut in the starting-11 at Martiricos with a stunning goal that opened the scoring, and an assist to Rubén Castro to make it 2-0. His self-confidence on the left wing of the attack delighted the fans. In addition, Dani Lorenzo made his scoring debut with the first team in an official match, finishing a textbook counterattack unbecoming of his young age. Cristian and Dani, pure Marbella talent.

Day of the province

Málaga featured heavily in the 11 and in Pepe Mel’s substitutions. There were four Malagueños in the starting line-up, with Manolo Reina, Escassi and captain Luis Muñoz, as well as reserve team player Cristian on the left wing. In addition, in the second half, Dani Lorenzo and a recovered Andrés Caro gave even more of a Costa del Sol accent to the team.

Much-needed win at home

Málaga and the fans needed to savour a victory, together, at La Rosaleda. For practical purposes, to allow a bit of breathing space in the standings with nine points (three away from 15th place) and it also represents the first victory of the 'Mel era'. Since he’s headed up the team, they’ve claimed points in four out of five games, with draws on matchdays 7, 8 and 9. The aim is to win the three points in Oviedo and continue moving up the table!
