Funes: “The team’s tenacity earned us three points”

Málaga CF’s coach spoke to the press in the ‘Juan Cortés’ room at La Rosaleda after the victory over CD Mirandés. “Experiencing moments like this gives you a lot of strength,” he said.

Very important win

“The team played well until the 35th minute. I asked them to keep trying, not to give the ball away. It’s not easy, they carry a heavy backpack, and with stones in it, it weighs even more, and that stress makes you settle for the easy options. I want to congratulate them, when there were more stones in the backpack, when everything seemed to be falling apart, they believed and kept going. Even when the victory seemed to slip away. That tenacity gave us the chance to take all three points.”

Correct and keep working

“Regardless of the result, there were moments when we weren’t ourselves. The plan was going well, but we haven’t yet had the time to develop the mechanisms that would give us an advantage. In those moments, we were less effective against their pressing, and in situations that forced us to run, we struggled. We have to keep being ourselves. I told them this at half-time. Have faith and don’t worry about what they do. If they score 2, we’ll score 3. We always have to go for the goal.”

Persistence in the face of adversity

“There are things that haven’t been done as I believe they will be in the future. What I really liked was that, even in adversity, they kept trying. This team isn’t just from now, look at how they achieved promotion. They believe until the very end. And that gives it a lot of value. We’re going to face situations like we’ve seen today.”

Three important points

“Experiencing moments like this gives you a lot of strength. If life has meant for it to be this way, you have to make the most of it. We were just one minute away from relegation. To believe, you have to create first.”
