Cómpeta, with the team in Tenerife

Málaga CF reaffirms its connection with the municipalities of the Costa del Sol. This time, José Luis Puche presents us with an impressive work that illustrates the Noche del Vino in Cómpeta.

Málaga Club de Fútbol is in the Canary Islands to face CD Tenerife tonight, Thursday 24th October at 21:00 at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López. This match, corresponding to Matchday 11 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, features Cómpeta as the highlight in both the poster design and the captain’s armband.

Cómpeta, known as the “Cornisa de la Costa del Sol” is a treasure of Axarquía, surrounded by the Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama. Its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses evoke the essence of Andalucía, forming part of the iconic Mudéjar Route. From the summit of Pico de la Maroma, the highest peak in the province, the landscape extends with breathtaking views.

Its name, derived from the Latin “compita” symbolises its ancient role as a crossroads. During the Muslim period, the village began to forge its identity until, in 1487, the Moriscos surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs, seeking to preserve their way of life. However, the rebellion of the 16th century marked a decisive chapter in its history, where the struggle and longing for freedom were etched into the soul of this Andalucían corner.

Walking through the picturesque streets of the town is an experience that captivates the soul. The whitewashed façades, adorned with cheerful flowerpots, create a dreamy setting. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción rises in the heart of the village, its Neo-Mudéjar tower proudly reaching towards the sky. Its interior, rich in art and spirituality, is a refuge of peace. Not far away, the Ermita de San Antón stands out for its simplicity.

The cuisine of Cómpeta is another of its great attractions. Its typical dishes, such as migas, fennel stew, and fried pumpkin, delight visitors. However, the true star is its famous sweet wine and exquisite raisins, which have been exported internationally for almost 50 years, renowned for their quality.

In Cómpeta, living is celebrating, and its festivities teach that life is better lived surrounded by laughter and good times. The Noche del Vino, on 15th August, marks the beginning of the grape harvest, filling the streets with music, dancing, and the flavour of the famous sweet wine. Additionally, the festival of San Antón revives the ancient ritual where farmers gather around the hermitage to bless their animals, giving thanks for protection and abundance in their work.

José Luis Puche, with his unmatched talent, transforms the captain’s armband and the poster for the match against CD Tenerife into authentic works of art. His skill once again captures the essence of the municipalities of Málaga, turning each piece into a tribute to our land.

In this creation, Puche illustrates the famous Noche del Vino in Cómpeta. The piece features bare feet crushing Muscat grapes, paying tribute to the ancient tradition of grape stomping. This celebration evokes the times when grape harvesters would head to the farmhouses, dedicating themselves to the harvest until October, when they would return home with the crushed grapes and packaged raisins, a legacy of effort and sacrifice.
