Atlético Malagueño take the Manuel Alcántara Cup on penalties
Atlético Malagueño were proclaimed champions of the Manuel Alcántara Cup yesterday, defeating CD El Palo on penalties. As the final whistle blew, the score was tied at 3-3, with the winner to be decided in a penalty shoot-out.
Both teams got off to a strong start, with a fairly equal dominance of the game during the first part. The Blue and Whites’ first setback came in the 19th minute when coach Josep Clotet was sent off, after he protested a decision made by the referee. However the Blue and Whites were first on the leader board thanks to a fantastic goal from Adrián, putting them ahead by 0-1.
Atlético Malagueño continued to pile the pressure on their opponent, with Emilio curling the call around keeper Loren to bring the Blue and Whites 0-2 up just before half time.
A brand new ‘Malaguista’ team went out on the pitch at the start of the second half, however El Palo soon took advantage of a goal opportunity as a miss from goalkeeper Toni Casamayor led to a goal for Julio (1-2). La Academia players were quick to retaliate, and a goal from Mauri saw Malagueño leading by 1-3. Soon after, El Palo’s Jesule was sent off leaving the team with just 10 men for the remainder of the game.
El Palo refused to give up, despite being a player down, and a penalty by Ibón in minute 69 saw them on the score board for the second time. With three minutes left in place, Javilillo scored the equaliser for El Palo, leading to the penalty shoot-out.
Mauri, Rufo and Cala all scored, and keeper Toni Casamayor saved the second shot from the local side, resulting in Atlético Malagueño claiming the title.
