Antonio Fernández and Joaquín, at the presentation of ‘The Challenge of the Pharaohs’ in Egypt

MCF’s Sporting Director, Antonio Fernández, and the Malaguista player, Joaquín Sánchez, were in Egypt this Thursday for the presentation of the international friendly, ‘The Challenge of the Pharaohs.’

On 29th February, Málaga Club de Fútbol will be in Cairo to take part in the international friendly tournament, ‘The Challenge of the Pharaohs’.  At the event’s official presentation today, which was held at the Hotel Mercure Cairo Le Sphinx, in Giza, Antonio Fernández and Joaquín were representing the Club.  The tournament is to be held at the 74,000-seater Cairo International Stadium, although the rival and the schedule have yet to be decided.

Antonio Fernández
“There was a lot of local press and Málaga has been very well received.  There’s been an amazing press conference and they have all been thrilled with Málaga’s attendance.  The rival has still to be announced but it can’t be ruled out that the game may be postponed as the 29th is a FIFA date, although we’re working on that but there is a possibility the date may be modified.  Joaquín has been welcomed for what he is, a star, and it’s important that Málaga is crossing boundaries and it’s a team that’s well-loved here.  The welcome they’re giving and love they’re showing us is huge.”

Joaquín
“The match has produced an enormous expectation. In the press conference there were 40 or 50 journalists, 20 or 30 cameras, and the expectation is high and we’re happy to be able to visit this country.  It’s my first time in Cairo and it’s fascinating; it’s a great city.”
