Salguero: a veteran with a Sevilla past

Formed in CD Málaga, Pepe Salguero is one of the cornerstones of the Association of Ex Málaga Players, and in his day was also a member of Sevilla FC.

For Salguero, Saturday’s clash between Sevilla-Málaga is not just another match: “It is a very special game for me.  They are two cities, two teams, two organisations and two sets of fans to which I feel very united, both personally and professionally.  I grew up from a footballing point of view in Málaga, and my career strengthened in Sevilla,” comments the veteran from Fuente de Piedra.

“It’s very difficult doing what Málaga has done recently; a series of consecutive, well-deserved victories, particularly coming from an unusual situation with regards to the league table.  Fortunately, the team has gone from less to more, confidence has grown and the coach has done a very good job of consolidating the squad,” says Salguero about Málaga CF’s good moment.

Salguero, one of the leading members of the ‘Malaguista’ veterans’ team in recent years, considers “there are new people now who bring physical freshness and quality, such as Fernando and Juanito for example, and others that are being incorporated.  I’ve been unable to participate recently as I travel at weekends, except for a few friendly games.”  Lastly, Pepe talks about the Club veterans, who “are a very united group, who not only want to play and enjoy football, but bring new people into the team, and unite different generations of Málaga players.”

Veterans debuting in 2016

The Association of Ex Málaga Players is in action tomorrow, Saturday 16th January.  The first match of the year for the ‘Malaguista’ veterans in the Liga Lúdica Andaluza (6th match) is taking place in Marbella.  The match, Cultural Marbella-Málaga, kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Carlos Sánchez (Vigil de Quiñones/El Pinar).  The Blue and Whites are second in the table, two points behind leaders, Estepona, who are away to Fuengirola this weekend.
