Club Atlético Málaga is now Málaga CF

Following Málaga CF’s recent Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders, the Blue and Whites’ women’s team becomes part of the entity.

Málaga Club de Fútbol absorbs Club Atlético Málaga, whose name becomes Málaga CF.  The Club reaffirms its link with women’s football, committed to the full integration of the first team that competes in the Women’s Second Division into the sporting organisational structure, as well as the senior 2nd Andaluza and 4th Andaluza cadete teams.

An historic entity

Club Atlético Málaga was founded in 1992, the first women’s team in Andalucía.  In 1995, they achieved promotion to the top flight of women’s football in Spain.  The first major milestone came in 1997, when Atlético Málaga finished runners-up of the Copa de la Reina, after losing 4-2 in the final against RCD Espanyol.

The 1998 triple

The 1997/98 season was an historic one for Atlético Málaga, winning the ‘triple’, never before done in the history of women’s football in Spain.  After winning the Liga Nacional group 4 championship, they took part in the Champions stage in Aranda de Duero from 8th to 10th May 1998, defeating Oroquieta Villaverde in the semi-finals by 1-0.  They also claimed the League title with a 2-0 win against Valencian side, San Vicente.

The Copa de la Reina title was won in Lleida, on 21st June 1998, with a 4-0 victory against Lagunak de Pamplona.  On 30th August 1998, Atlético Málaga won the ‘triple’ following a Spain Supercup victory over Lagunak at the Annexe ground in the return leg by 1-0, (Lagunak won the first leg by 4-3).

Present

In the 2007/08 season, the team was promoted to the then named “Superliga”, having been proclaimed champions of First Division (Group 5), with spectacular records: 23 wins out of 26 games, enabling them to enter the play-offs where they achieved their goal of promotion.  Atlético Málaga’s last cycle in the top flight was between 2008-2012, and since then they have competed in the Second Division.
