Willy: “We need to win our next two away games”

Goalkeeper, Willy Caballero held a press conference this morning, before the second training session of the week ahead of Saturday’s League clash with Rayo Vallecano.

Willy looks at the forthcoming League calendar: “We’ve got two away matches coming up, and it’s essential that we recover some of the points we lost in the last home game.  We’re determined to win on Saturday, as our direct rivals are now ahead of us in the table and we haven’t had a win for a while.  A victory against Rayo is crucial.”

Analysing the next match against Rayo Vallecano, Willy doesn’t believe the size of the pitch will be a disadvantage: “We’ve played in many different grounds on different pitches, and what we need to focus on is performing as well as we possibly can.  Rayo play very creative football and have some quality players, so we need to ensure we’re prepared for a tough match.”

As well as the two away games in Vallecas and San Sebastían, Málaga CF also has the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg coming up.  When asked why it will be more difficult; either reaching the Champions League semi-finals or ending in fourth place in the League for the second consecutive season, the ‘Malaguista’ keeper was unable to choose: “Both competitions are incredibly tough.  Finishing in fourth place last year was amazing, but it was a long fight to get there, much the same as this year.  However reaching the Champions League semi-finals is a two-match battle against an amazing team.  I don’t know which will be more difficult, but we’ll have to work as hard as we can in both competitions, starting this weekend against Rayo Vallecano.”

The Argentinean-born goalkeeper is grateful to the fans at La Rosaleda for their support, particularly in the last match against RCD Espanyol: “I’m feeling better now, and I was pleased with the fans’ reaction.  I can’t erase what happened unfortunately, but my mistake lost us the three points from that match, and we were definitely the superior side.  However we’ve moved on and I’ll work as hard as I can to ensure it doesn’t happen again, but the fans have been truly amazing.”
