Weligton: “We’re determined to achieve great things”

Málaga CF defender, Weligton, held a press conference in Bitburg, Germany this morning, where Bernd Shuster’s men are undertaking the first phase of pre-season training.

The Brazilian-born player spoke to the media following the first session of the day, which started at 7:30: “Training so far has been really tough, particularly during the cardio workouts, the ground has lots of ups, downs, steep hills etc…it’s not easy.  However this two-week stage of training is crucial to ensure we’re all match-fit throughout the season.”

With regards to the new coach, Weligton comments: “The coach has a wealth of experience in the world of football, and his style of training is not too far away from what we’ve been used to.  Schuster likes to focus on ball possession, so it’s not been too hard to adapt to his style.  We know now what he expects from us and what to focus on in training; little by little he’s getting to know each one us individually.”

“It’s important that the new players join us as soon as possible to make it easier to adapt. We’re all working really hard in preparation for the start of the League season, in which we hope to achieve great things,” explains the Blue and Whites’ defender when asked about new signings.

Weligton confirms that the team had done everything possible to make the new players feel as welcome as possible before they arrived, in particular Bobley Anderson: “We’ve got a great team, and one of the few that really makes a big effort with new players and tries to help them as much as possible.  From a language point of view, Kameni can help Anderson a lot, as well as Fabrice, who’s also a young player, and the rest of us will do as much as we can to help them fit in on the pitch.”

Weligton adds that the situation within the Club is much better compared to last season: “There has been great improvement within the organisation of the Club, we know who we can speak to if we have a problem or need to discuss something important.  Almost all payments are up to date, including our wages, there are still certain bonuses pending, but that’s the same with every club in Spain.  Luckily the only thing we’re waiting for is the start of the season.”

Finally, Weligton praises almost everything at the Sportschule complex: “The surroundings are perfect, the football pitches and gym are great and the climate is ideal.  The only thing that isn’t quite up to scratch is the internet connection, which is crucial.”
