Valuable away win against the league leaders (0-1)

Victory for Málaga CF against Cádiz CF, at the Ramón de Carranza, on matchday 28 of LaLiga SmartBank. A goal in the second half by team captain Adrián from the penalty spot led the Malaguistas to triumph.

A duel of Andalusian rivalry, with a great atmosphere in the stands. Pellicer introduced two changes to the starting line-up, coincidentally two Cádiz-born players, defender Diego González and winger Tete Morente, came on in place of Lombán and Hicham.

The first half showed the leader of the division was more comfortable without the ball than with it, restrained in their field against an MCF that went from strength to strength showing their superiority over the rival, particularly towards the end of the first half. With hardly any opportunities in either area, chances for Malbasic and Salvi for Cádiz in 35’ and 39’, were the only causes of danger for Munir’s goal.

Before the half-time whistle (41’), the best opportunity for the Malaguistas ended in a goal from Adrián following a trademark Luis Hernández throw-in. However, the goal was disallowed by the referee for a previous foul by Sadiku.

In the second half, Juanpi attempted to surprise Cifuentes in 47’ with a shot from midfield. A minute later, a clear hand ball in the Cádiz area following an action by Tete was checked by VAR and a penalty awarded. Adrián went on to score his sixth goal of the season (0-1, 51’). This was Málaga’s reward for outwitting the rival on a tactical level. Juanpi, in 59’, could have scored the second goal in a clear counter on the edge of the area. The Venezuelan was substituted by Pacheco in 64’.

Álex Fernández was unlucky with two powerful shots in 63’ and 68’. Cádiz, trailing on the scoreboard sought an equaliser with more heart than football. Pellicer refreshed the wide area bringing on Boulahroud for Antoñín (75’). Pacheco forced a good save from Cifuentes in 76’. Nano, in 84’, sent the ball to the side of the Blue and White goal. Renato, for Tete Morente, was the final Malaguista substitution in 88’. Perea, as Cádiz were going all out to go level, narrowly missed out on a goal in 92’, coming up against a wall in the form of Diego González.

A final 0-1 result and a hard-fought victory for the Blue and Whites who have 34 points in the standings (5 above the relegation zone and 6 away from sixth place) after 28 matches in LaLiga SmartBank. Vamos, Málaga!
