Undeserved defeat against Hertha (1-2)

Málaga CF lost to Hertha BSC in their first match in the Schauinsland Reisen Cup, held at the MSV Arena in Duisburg. Borja opened the scoring, but the German rival came from behind with goals from Baak and Esswein (penalty).

This match saw the debut of Málaga CF’s official third kit, which is orange in colour. The start of play was excellent, with various occasions and a strong attacking style of play. Borka, in a one-on-one, and Jony, with a long shot, could have opened the scoring in minute 8. Juankar, who played his first minutes of the pre-season, was very active on the wing.

After the first quarter of an hour of play, the Malaguistas opened the scoring thanks to a perfect pass from Jony, assisting Borja to head the ball into the net (1-0, 17’). In the final stage of the game, of 45-minute duration, things got complicated with the expulsion of Jony in minute 28. Soon after, Hertha equalised following a corner kick, with a goal from young player, Baak (1-1, 32’).

Five minutes before the end, the referee awarded a penalty, which wasn’t so much the fault of Juankar. This led to the second goal for the Berlin-based rival thanks to Esswein from the penalty spot (1-2, 42’). Although Hertha came out on top, they were inferior to Málaga for the majority of play. Málaga’s performance level and the number of quality minutes of play were truly relevant.

Míchel González selected the following line-up: Roberto; Rosales, Luis H., Baysse, M. Torres, Juankar, Mula, Recio, Jony, Adrián and Borja.
