Sofian: “I learnt a lot from the Islamic Games”

The ‘Malaguista’ is back with Atlético Malagueño following the Islamic Solidarity Games in Indonesia, in which Morocco’s under-21’s were proclaimed champions.

What are the Islamic Games?
It’s a very important competition, despite only founded three years ago, in which all the Arabic teams take part.  It was a fantastic experience for me and I learnt a lot.  The majority of my teammates play in the Moroccan First Division, so they taught me a great deal.

You were one of the youngest in the team
Yes, although it’s the under-21’s team, I’ve only just turned 20.  Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to play in the Games, but I came away with a lot of experience from the training sessions and the friendly match we played against a local side.  The coach, Hassan Benabicha, showed a lot of faith in me.

This wasn’t your first experience with the national team, you also took part in the Arab Cup
That’s right, I was called up by the same coach when he was in charge of the under-20’s.  I hope both the coach, as well as the Moroccan Federation, select me for future team line-ups, as it’s a real honour for me to represent my country.

Who do you look up to in the Moroccan team?
Although they don’t play in my position on the pitch, as I’m a centre forward and they’re strikers, but even before I signed for Málaga CF, I followed El Hamdaoui, and of course Ben Barek, who has been a wonderful support to me since I arrived at the Club.  They’re both my idols from the Moroccan national team.

Have you been following Atlético Malagueño’s great start to the season?
Yes of course, I keep in close contact with my teammates thanks to social networking sites like Twitter and Whatsapp.  I’m thrilled with the team’s success so far this season, I’m really keen to get back to work with the team and put into practice everything I’ve learnt in training.  I’ll be working as hard as I can to earn a place in the starting-11.
