Schuster: “We reacted well tonight”

Málaga CF coach, Bernd Schuster, held a press conference after tonight’s derby against Sevilla FC at La Rosaleda.

The German-born manager analyses tonight’s important 3-2 victory over Sevilla: “The most important thing was to win, and I’m pleased with how we did it.  We turned the match around, which was very positive and will help the team in forthcoming matches.  Looking back, when we’ve been 1-2 down, we’ve always lost, as shown against Bilbao and Osasuna.  We reacted well tonight and were lucky with Samu’s goal.  It was a perfect game for us; there were some difficult moments, when the score was 1-1 and the rival took the lead, but we turned our situation around.  I think tonight’s performance will really help the team in the future.”

After breaking the ‘no goal’ spell from recent games, Schuster adds: “It’s important to maintain confidence in the players, as luck does come into it to a degree.  Despite creating great goal chances in past games, we couldn’t find the net, but I think we were lucky with tonight’s shot at such a crucial point in the game, even though it didn’t look powerful enough to get a goal.  We scored three brilliant goals tonight.”

Without doubt, the amazing atmosphere at La Rosaleda was evident on the pitch: “The fans were fantastic in this derby, which helped us a great deal.  I’m so pleased we got a victory for them, they were with us the whole way. Despite the tough moments, the team really pulled through,” comments the Blue and Whites’ coach.

Schuster remembers Luis Aragonés: “The news came as a big shock.  He was such an amazing coach, a wonderful person and a great friend.  We saw him recently in Madrid, and will always remember him, that’s for sure.”
