Reigning champions will defend their title in the final (1-0)

Adrián’s last-minute goal gave victory to the Malaguistas against Villarreal CF. UD Las Palmas will be the next rival in tomorrow’s grand final of the Carranza Cup.

The Carranza Cup is always an important date in the summer pre-season calendar. Málaga CF arrived at the stadium in Cádiz as reigning champions, bringing the Blue and White colours to a very Yellow dominated competition, as Villarreal CF, UD Las Palmas and host team, Cádiz CF all wear the characteristic colour.

Following the initial match, in which UD Las Palmas secured a minimal defeat over Cádiz CF, Málaga CF and Villarreal CF stepped on to the pitch, both with the clear aim of qualifying to the final.

Both teams tried to set the pace of the game from the outset, but the expeditious defences from each side prevented any dangerous approaches. Rosales surpassed the Villarreal defence on two occasions, but was unsuccessful. The winger made it to the heart of the area in minute 28, but had no teammate to benefit from the assist.

A few minutes later, in 21’, Recio tried his luck from a set piece, but the persistent wind stopped him netting a goal. Finally, the ball went out just inches away from the crossbar.

Villarreal CF also tried to open the scoring, but the strong work by the Malaguista defenders, plus a solid performance from Roberto, put paid to their hopes. At half-time the result remained 0-0.

In the second half, the Blue and Whites controlled possession and started to reach the rival area more often. Borja Bastón launched a powerful shot very near the goal line following a tricky manoeuvre, however the keeper made an agile save in 55’. Minutes later, in 59’, Juanpi served up a great corner, connecting well with a Baysse header. The ball grazed the post.

Juankar was brought down inside the area by Miguelón from the Yellows in the 62nd minute, and the referee signalled a penalty. Adrián stepped up to the mark and propelled the ball towards the target, however the rival keeper anticipated his intention and stopped the Blue and Whites taking the lead.

The Malaguistas continued to dominate possession, prevailing in midfield, but Villarreal also generated opportunities. A shot from Bakambú inside the area in minute 82 was sent to a corner by Roberto.

As the match was approaching an agonising end, Adrián headed a tense shot from Mula from the right to clinch a 1-0 lead in the last breath of play. After the celebration, the referee blew the final whistle, signalling Málaga CF again reaching the final of the prestigious Carranza Cup.
