Recio: “We’re looking to reach as high as we can”

José Luis García del Pozo ‘Recio’ was the Malaguista player in charge of today’s press conference. “We want to maintain the same level we’ve shown in recent games and continue earning points”.

Positive dynamic

“Everything has changed a lot. A week ago, we were facing a final against Sporting, and if we’d have lost, things would have been very different; now a week later it seems as though everything is on track. The last two victories have given us an incredible boost, we always had faith in the work we were doing, even though the results didn’t reflect this. Finally justice has been done, the team deserved to win and the fans deserved to go home ecstatic as they did on Saturday, following so much suffering throughout the year. The joy and confidence of the group is also reflected in training sessions, which we must make the most of from now until the end of the season”.

Individual aspect

“I’m thrilled as I haven’t played a match from the start since 27th January, when I was injured in Pamplona. I couldn’t wait to get back on the pitch and play again. I felt comfortable – against Barça – and when the team is doing well, we are all as one, both defensively and on the attack. The players feel more comfortable, which was seen in the match the other day”.

Míchel

“He’s not been with us long, but from the start he’s tried to impose his philosophy. He trusted in us and he continued to work in the same way. He prepared the match against Barcelona extremely well, so a lot of the success is down to him as he planned the game and selected the players. Hopefully from now until the end of the season we can continue like this and move higher up”.

Calm and ambition

“We’re much calmer now, as should Sporting have won last week they would have only been two points away from us; then Barcelona would have arrived when it seemed the team was already in Second. When you now see the 11-point gap plus goal average with seven matches left, we must remain optimistic and know we’ve done things well. That said, it’s also important to focus on the last seven games and ensure we are super ambitious. The minimum we can do is maintain the same level we’ve shown in recent games, continue earning points and get as high as we can - both for the fans and so we can all enjoy a great end to the season following a year of suffering”.

Dépor-Málaga

“We want to keep this feeling and positive dynamic, and achieve a good result in A Coruña, knowing their necessity and how they’ll come out. Their salvation comes from defeating us, so we must be aware that they’ll fight to the death. However, we’ll follow our same dynamic, make the most of it and come home with something positive with confidence and attitude. It will be an important step forward, enabling us to live the final stretch of the season with more peace of mind and joy”.
