Rafa Gil will head up The Academy

Málaga CF again opts for a man of the house to take charge of Blue and Whites’ grassroots football. Rafa Gil returns to the Club and has signed a contract for the next two seasons.

Rafael Gil Sánchez has great experience in youth football throughout his extensive footballing career. Despite his young age (42 years old), he has a broad background as a youth coach, and particularly in recent years has led projects of relevance at an international level.

At the start of his career he was director and coach of the Escuela de Fútbol de Tolox for five years (1996-01). His first stage at Málaga CF covered five seasons (2001-06), as coach in the youth ranks of Alevín and Cadete and participating in the methodology of ‘La Base’. Following two campaigns as coach of CD Alhaurino in Third Division (2006-08), Gil took charge of Málaga B as coach in the Third Division between 2008 and 2011. In turn, in the interim, he coached Málaga CF in the 1,000th match of Málaga football against RCD Espanyol in Barcelona (2010/11), before the arrival of Pellegrini to the Malaguista dugout with whom he worked as coaching assistant to the Chilean.

Following another experience as coach in the Third Division with Unión Estepona (2011-12), Rafa Gil began a long and fruitful career abroad. First, he was coach of Saudi Arabia U-17s (2012/13) and then as assistant to López Caro for the Saudi Arabia national team (2013-15). In 2015/16, he underwent scouting work in England for the technical secretary of RCD Espanyol, and since 2016 until 30th June last year he was director/coach of international LaLiga projects in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, coordinating with twelve coaches under his charge at CAR (High Performance Centre) in Dubai.

Work, enthusiasm, experience and Malaguismo define a Rafa Gil who takes the reins of The MCF Academy in what will be his third stage at MCF. Welcome, and lots of luck!
