Pellicer: "This point is worth two"

The Malaguista coach analysed the match against CD Tenerife at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López: “The team defended very well, sacrificed a lot, but there are a lot of things to improve on”, he said in the post-match press conference.

A team with soul

“During these two post-lockdown games a lot has happened to us. We must improve, but the best thing is the effort shown by the players when we’ve been down to 10 men. It’s tough to come where we’ve come from and be in the situation we’re in. The team showed soul, the statistics have nothing to do with what we saw tonight”.

Analysis of the point

“This point is worth two as in the second round the direct rivals count the goal average. We came here with the idea of claiming all three points. In regard to the balance of the match, I think Tenerife got off to a good start and felt more comfortable on the pitch. It took us a while to adjust and then following the pause for a water break, the team was better and that’s when we had a player sent off. In the second half, the team defended with a lot of soul. I value this point because it’s worth two and we know how much we’ve got to improve on the attack”.

Improve

“When we were 11 against 11 they were the better side, this is where we have to be self-critical. We have to know what situation we’re in, but we must improve, the players need to let go, and we must seek solutions. However, today, in spite of the situation, the team made an enormous sacrifice against a rival that subdued us somewhat, but the team defended very well. In terms of the physical, running is still a struggle, and we must improve our attack”.

Match analysis

“There were two very different halves to this game. During the initial 20 minutes, Tenerife found routes that we had prepared, reached a certain area and had depth. The game altered after the water break as we changed, we felt more comfortable. Being a man down meant the team had to withdraw, but that was our merit. The home side was better with 11 against 11. Tenerife have very clear ideas”.

Away game behind closed doors

“The emptiness made it feel strange, but the return of football is welcome as it means that, little by little, we’re getting back to normal. The difference between playing at home and away is the burden of the journey, as the fans win points at stadiums, but that’s not a factor now. This is a show without fans and without the passion and spirit that supporters have. LaLiga, like everyone else, is taking steps forward and we will get through this nightmare”.

Expulsion of Keidi Bare

“I haven’t been able to see Keidi’s expulsion on television yet. We’ve had two odd matches. It happened with Lombán in the last game, so now we’ll have to see what happened tonight. Refereeing is very difficult, which is why we have VAR, for any issues to be rectified. We face the same obstacle. When I have a look at the images, I’ll be able to make evaluations, but we feel disappointed as if it wasn’t the case, we were unduly punished. We were not at all good in the last match, but when we improved, that’s when we had a man sent off. The same happened today, as we got better we had another expulsion. I hope, for the good of football, that these situations improve as humans make mistakes, but we have tools there to ensure we don’t get it wrong”.
