Pellegrini: “We’re determined for the three points tomorrow”

Málaga CF coach, Manuel Pellegrini, and player Oguchi Onyewu, held a press conference at the Ciudad de Málaga Athletics Stadium, the official UEFA Champions League press conference ahead of the sixth group stage match against Anderlecht.

Pellegrini

“Whenever any team goes out on the pitch, they’re determined to play the best football they can.  From a sporting point of view it’s important to win, no sportsman ever wants to lose.  We’ll be concentrating on performing at a high level and maintain our undefeated streak in the group stage, which is also important from an economic point of view.  We certainly won’t be relaxed out on the pitch tomorrow and will be in search of three points from the start of the match.”

“I think we’re very fortunate to have already qualified to the next stage of the Champions League, as group leaders.  As soon as we got the point from the Milan match and we knew we’d done enough, then our priority changed to the League matches.  We then sealed our first place in the group in St. Petersburg, and will again be looking for another three points tomorrow by performing as well as we can.”

“I don’t believe there’s much difference between Málaga in the Champions, and Málaga in the League.  We’ve been in European positions since the start of the season, and there are teams who have performed better than us so far.  However I think we’re handling the pressure of taking part in both competitions very well, especially having already qualified to the next round of the Champions League.  It’s definitely an advantage being in this position.”

“It will be a very different match with regards to the first leg, between two teams at different levels.  The first time we came up against Anderlecht was our first away game against a rival with a lot of experience in the Champions.  However, now things look very different.  We’ve already qualified whilst Anderlecht are playing for the chance to take part in the UEFA Cup.  The performance level of both teams will be shown on the pitch tomorrow.”

“I haven’t got any preference regarding our rival in the next round.  I think it’s important that we’re in first place in the group, not just because we’ll be up against a second-placed team, as in many cases they can be tougher to beat than a team in first place.  I think it’s good to have our last group stage match at home, it’s definitely an advantage.”

Onyewu

“It’s very much a waiting game for a player who’s arrived in a new country, at a new club, and who needs some time to adapt.  I’ve been here three months now, and I must say I’m feeling great.  I haven’t perhaps played as much as I’d have liked, as most footballers want to play as many minutes on the pitch as possible.  But for now I’m focusing on each match at a time.”

“I’m very excited, as I am with any match really.  I played in the League in Belgium for several years so I know some of the players quite well, but tomorrow will be all about bringing three points home.  There’ll be a bit of time after the match to catch up with my old friends, but for now we’re completely focused on the game.”
