Painful defeat at El Toralín (2-0)

Málaga CF lost out to SD Ponferradina on league matchday 39. Two goals from Yuri, in 76' and 86' of the second half, decided the game.

Málaga CF visited SD Ponferradina this Sunday surrounded by more than 50 fans who travelled the 916 kilometres between El Toralín and La Rosaleda Stadium. Another example of unconditional love that continues to amaze Spanish football.

With the atmosphere in the Blue and Whites’ favour, despite playing away from home, the lads (wearing the black shirt and white shorts and socks on this occasion) stepped on to the pitch with the intention of imposing their gameplay.

Pellicer's men tried to dominate by being strong in defence - they barely allowed the locals any clear chances - and insistent on the attack, linking together several dangerous approaches. However, they failed to pierce the opponent's goal in the first 45 minutes. The scoreboard remained 0-0 at half-time.

The Blue and White fans didn’t allow the atmosphere to drop in the second half as they continued to support the team with their chants at El Toralín.

Málaga CF came close to taking the lead thanks to Álex Calvo, who came on for Burgos after the break, in 58'. The homegrown player shot with great intention from the top of the area towards the corner of the far post, but the rival goalkeeper guessed his intention and cleared the shot.

As the minutes passed, play became even, although the tension was palpable due to everything that was at stake. The locals, through Yuri, took the lead in 76'. Then 10 minutes later, the veteran local striker scored again for Ponferradina (2-0, 86').

The final 2-0 result leaves MCF with 40 points in 19th place after 39 games played, eight points from safety in LaLiga SmartBank.
