Malagueño win after extra time and advance to the next round in Jaén (1-2)

Atlético Malagueño defeated Real Jaén, at Nuevo La Victoria, in the second leg (first leg, 1-1) of the first round of the promotion playoffs to 2ª RFEF. Jesús Martín and Juanmita scored for the Blue and Whites in a win with a comeback included.

Juanfran Funes selected the following starting-11: Carlos López; Bilal ©, Murillo, Recio, Issa Fomba; Izan Merino; Rafa, Álex Rico, Paco; Jesús Martín and Juanmita. Rafa, returning after suspension, was the main new addition to the line-up.

After the first quarter of an hour, the locals took the lead. A Malaguista mistake in defence and an attentive Edu made the most of it to outwit Carlos López (1-0, 16'). The tie was very much in favour of Jaén, since Malagueño needed two goals to win and advance to the next round. At half-time they held their 1-0 lead to the delight of the Jaén fans.

Funes brought on striker, Chupete in the second half in place of Juvenil, Izan Merino. As in the first half, just 15 minutes into play there was a goal. This time, for Malagueño. A calculated cross from the left by Issa Fomba and an impeccable shot into the net by Jesús Martín (1-1, 60'). The Malaguistas grew in their football and their conviction to beat the team in second place in Group 9 of 3ª RFEF, who showed anxiety on several occasions throughout game.

At the end of regulation time, the 1-1 draw led to extra time. If this result remained the same at the end of 120 minutes, Real Jaén would qualify due to their higher position in the regular season. There was no option for penalties.

Malagueño had to score, and they did. Juanmita, after local goalkeeper, Sánchez cleared a shot from distance by Álex Rico, scored a goal that would lead to the final 1-2 result in minute 97. The Malagueño winger was decisive with his goal in the first leg a week ago at the Federación Malagueña ground, and scored his fourth consecutive goal, following on from his two goals in Maracena in the last league game to reach the promotion playoffs.

During extra time Funes gradually introduced Balta, Arriaza, Oñate and Bolívar, looking for fresh legs in the final stages. Balta had two chances to take the score to 1-3. A desperate Jaén tried with more heart than football without luck or success.

The 1-2 final result (2-3 on aggregate) gives Malagueño the chance to continue fighting for promotion to the Segunda Federación. In the next round of the playoffs, they’ll face CD El Palo FC, who defeated UD Torre del Mar in the other tie.
