Oviedo, kilometre 19

The third draw of the season to bring an end to 2018, provisionally in direct promotion positions to LaLiga Santander. Málaga CF, on the return to Oviedo after almost two decades, brought a point home.

These are some of the highlights of #RealOviedoMálaga that ended in a 0-0 draw at the Carlos Tartiere:

Scoring points is always important

Although the match perhaps cannot be considered attractive, there are certain abrupt games in which not losing, in the long-term, can be decisive in reaching the set objectives. Málaga were solid in Oviedo, they kept a clean sheet for the second consecutive match and even moved up a place in the standings, now second following Deportivo’s defeat in Cádiz. After this draw the team is now looking forward to a home win in the next match against Reus.

Colossal Diego González

Hard work bears fruit and Muñiz always rewards it. Following the injury of Luis Hernández, the versatile and ambidextrous defender from Cádiz stepped up to the plate together with Pau Torres on the right. At the Tartiere his determination in crosses and deflections, in particular two actions inside the area that could have led to glory for Oviedo, converted Diego into an impregnable wall for the local attack. Clear progression.

Lacen scare and a wonderful gesture

Medhi Lacen returned to the line-up, in place of sanctioned N’Diaye, executing with experience the work of defensive pivot alongside Adrián. In the second half, after sustaining a blow, he feared a significant injury. Fortunately, Lacen recovered quickly and received a huge ovation from the local crowd. Fair play in the stands and, on the pitch, the number ‘6’ completed the entire game without incident.

Goodbye to 2018…

The match in Oviedo was Málaga CF’s last of the year. There go another 12 months with two very different parts: the first was one of suffering and pain at leaving the Spanish footballing elite following a prestigious decade; and the second with renewed hope and good results positioning the team within the LaLiga 1|2|3. There’s no time for more this year. The past is now history and with the current line of work for the future, 2019 promises to be fruitful and positive.
