Match preview: Villarreal-Málaga

Málaga CF is visiting Estadio de la Cerámica to face Villarreal CF in the 22nd LaLiga Santander match of the season. Referee, Bikandi Garrido from the Basque Country will be officiating tomorrow’s game, kicking off at 12:00.

To take into account

  • Should he be in action tomorrow, Roberto Rosales will play his 100th official match with Málaga CF, being the only player on the team to have played every minute of LaLiga. Up to now, Rosales has competed in 99 matches with MCF, been included in every starting line-up, and played 96 complete games out of 99.
  • This match will be the 14th time Málaga CF has played Villarreal CF in Castellón in the League. The balance is three victories, three draws and seven defeats for the Malaguistas.
  • This will be the third time Bikandi Garrido will referee Málaga CF in an away match in the First Division, and the first of this current 2016/17 season.

The first Villarreal CF-Málaga CF

On 4th March 2001, Málaga CF visited El Madrigal for the first time. The 25th League match of the 2000/01 season ended in a 1-2 victory for the Malaguistas (Arruabarrena / Darío Silva 2). Joaquín Peiró selected the following line-up: Contreras; Rojas, Bravo, Larrainzar (Fernando Sanz 67’), Roteta; Rufete, Movilla, De los Santos, Sandro (Zárate 67’); Darío Silva and Dely Valdés (Canabal 89’). 

 

The final of the Intertoto

Villarreal CF and Málaga CF disputed the first leg of the UEFA Intertoto Cup final at El Madrigal on 13th August 2002. In minute 8, Gerardo scored a superb goal from a free kick, leading to the definitive 0-1, in a tie that Málaga went on to win and be proclaimed champions. Peiró’s team was made up of: Contreras; Josemi, Fernando Sanz, Roteta, Valcarce; Gerardo, Juanito, Romero (Sandro 65’), Iznata (Duda 80’); Darío Silva (Leko 65’) and Dely Valdés.

 

Curiosities

  • Villarreal were a favourable rival for the Darío Silva-Dely Valdés pairing, scoring four goals between the two players in the team’s first two visits to El Madrigal.
  • There was never an official match between CD Málaga and Villarreal CF.
