Málaga CF will be in action at the Gran Canaria stadium against UD Las Palmas in the 19th LaLiga match of the season. Kicking off at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, the game will be refereed by Iglesias Villanueva from Galicia.
The ‘Malaguistas’, in 11th place with 23 points, are hoping for their 5th consecutive victory against the recently promoted team, currently in 16th place with 17 points. In the First Division, MCF has visited the Canary Islands ground on two occasions. The first was in the 5th match of the 2000/01 season, when Peiró’s Málaga lost by 2-1, with local goals from Oulare and Orlando, and Vicente Valcarce for the Blue and Whites. The second time was the 4th match of the 2001/02 season, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
In 15 seasons in the First Division, MCF has accumulated 700 points and 186 victories. If they win in Las Palmas, they will take over CD Málaga’s record of 186 wins in the Spanish footballing elite.
Charles, who is suspended from the match in Las Palmas, has scored 7 of the 13 LaLiga goals for the Blue and Whites in 2015/16.
‘Talismán’ Valerón has come up against MCF in the First Division 15 times, and was only defeated once (8 victories and 6 draws).
Unprecedented duel on the benches: Quique Setién and Javi Gracia have never come up against each other as coaches.
Iglesias Villanueva has refereed MCF 4 times in away matches in the First Division, ending in 2 ‘Malaguista’ victories, 1 draw and 1 Blue and Whites’ defeat.
Historical curiousities:
CD Málaga’s first relegation to the Second Division, and at the same time UD Las Palmas’ first promotion to the First Division, was in the promotion match between Las Palmas-Málaga (4-1) played on 08/07/1951.
The story of Agustín Perdomo. The player from the Canary Islands who underwent military service in Ceuta, played for Imperio de Ceuta and signed to Atlético de Marbella. In Marbella, CD Málaga showed interest in him in the 1965/66 season. Perdomo later became the only player in CD Málaga’s history to sign to the Club and not even train one day. He never played for UD Las Palmas, even though he was born in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
