Match preview: #GironaMálaga

Málaga CF is heading to Cataluña to face Girona FC on LaLiga SmartBank matchday 3. The match will take place tomorrow, Sunday from 19:00 (Movistar LaLiga and GOL).

The Blue and Whites, with four points following the draw with UD Las Palmas and in sixth place in the standings, now faces Girona FC (18th place) with one point, obtained from the first match of the season against Real Sporting de Gijón.

The match will be officiated by Juan Luis Pulido Santana from the Canary Islands, in what will be his fifth official match refereeing Málaga CF in the silver division. The four previous games, all last season, ended in three victories and one defeat for the Malaguistas. The man in charge of the VAR is Galician referee, David Pérez Pallás.

  • Málaga CF has always scored points from Second Division games held in Cataluña. In the 1988/99 season the lads drew against the FC Barcelona reserve team (1-1) and defeated UE Lleida by 0-2; whilst in the 2007/08 and 2018/19 seasons, they faced Gimnàstic de Tarragona, which ended in a draw (1-1) and victory (0-1) respectively.
  • In addition, last season, they should have played CF Reus Deportiu, a match they won 0-1 due to the rival’s withdrawal from the competition.
  • Adrián Quintela, ‘juvenil’ goalkeeper, debuts in a Malaguista line-up.

  • The second time Málaga CF will play Girona FC at Montilivi. Last time, Málaga CF lost 1-0 against the Red and Whites thanks to a goal form former Malaguista, Alcalá in a First Division clash.
  • In the four seasons MCF has played in the silver division, on matchday 3, the Blue and Whites obtained two victories: 4-1 against Córdoba CF (2007/08) and 0-1 against UD Almería (2018/19); one draw (1-1), against Sporting de Gijón (1998/99); and one defeat, 2-1 against Albacete Balompié (2006/07).
