Match preview: #EscobedoMálaga

Málaga CF will be facing Unión Montañesa Escobedo in Cantabria, at Eusebio Arce Stadium, in the Copa del Rey first round clash. Kick-off is tonight at 20:30.

The Malaguistas (16th in LaLiga SmartBank with 21 points) are up against the rival from Cantabria, sitting in 5th place of Third Division Group III with 30 points. The match is not being televised. Jon Ander González Esteban from the Basque Country will be officiating, his first time refereeing Málaga CF in an official match.

To take into account

  • UM Escobedo are an historic side in the Third Division. They have been in the category for 31 consecutive seasons, and group champions on three occasions.
  • For MCF, under the current name, this is their first time against a Third Division side in the Copa del Rey.
  • Málaga CF have played a Copa del Rey match before in Cantabria, against Real Racing Club de Santander in the 2007/08 season (2-0 to Racing)
  • With the debut of Julio against Extremadura UD, there are now 364 players who have taken part in an official match with Málaga CF since 1994.
  • Should he play, the reserve team’s Juande will be player number 360 to wear the Blue and White jersey. In addition, he would be player number 56 to debut with Málaga CF in the Copa del Rey, the most recent being Abqar, Héctor, Koné and Iván Jaime against UD Almería.
  • The first time Málaga CF and UM Escobedo will play each other in an official match. However, in the Copa del Rey 1991/92, the extinct CD Málaga faced the Cantabrian rival, with victories by 0-1 in the first leg and 2-0 in the return leg at La Rosaleda.

UM Escobedo-CD Málaga

On 12th September 1991, CD Málaga, coached by Abdullah Ben Barek, began their Cup journey, facing UM Escobedo in the third-round tie. The first leg, held in Camargo, had the following team line-ups:

  • UM Escobedo: Antolín, Ramos, Roncal, Cordero, Lanza (Herminio ’59), Robert, Maza, Zalo, Julio, Cachi (Sergio ’46) and Toño.
  • CD Málaga: Ignacio, Zapatera, Txirri (Adolfo ’36), Monreal, Padilla, Luis Merino, Roa, Quino, Molina (Makanaky ’46), Villa and Basti.

Basti, in 72’, scored the definitive 0-1 for the Malaguistas. The referee, Esteban Díaz, showed the yellow card to local player, Ramos. In terms of stats, Basti scored his first official goal with Málaga’s first team.
