Luque: “On Saturday my heart will be divided between the teams”

The former Málaga CF and Deportivo de la Coruña player, Alberto Luque speaks to the Club’s official website to talk about the two teams who marked his fantastic footballing career.

Málaga and Deportivo are the two teams I had the most affection for in my sporting career.  On Saturday my heart will be divided, as I wish both teams the best.  It’s a final for Depor due to their number of matches without a win, whilst Málaga have had a good run lately,” says the man from Tarrasa, who scored his unforgettable scissor goal at the Riazor against Málaga: “It was in minute 88, my great friend Fernando Sanz was in front of me, and it was a mid-cross from Víctor, the now Deportivo coach; I decided to control it upfront and slam it into the back of the net.  It went great and it was a spectacular goal, although I felt bad for Málaga.”

The Catalan former player maintains a strong friendship with current members of the Malaguista squad, including his “great friend”, masseuse, Marcelino Torrontegui, and one of the team captains, Weligton, who is “an amazing person and player,” in the words of Luque, who is retired from professional practice, but always linked to football: “I left and began the coaching course.  I was then with Punto Pelota and El Chiringuito with Josep Pedrerol, and later on the Hospitalet coaching team.  I also formed part of the candidacy of Joan Laporta for the Barcelona presidency, and am now with the Barça veterans, travelling all over the world, and I love it.”

Alberto Luque mentioned his former teammate and current sports director at the Club, Francesc Arnau: “He’s a person who has earned everything he’s got.  He’s a fighter like few others, a hard-worker, which is the best thing for Málaga.”  On the Costa del Sol the ‘torero’ is still loved and recognised: “I’ve still got my house in Guadalmar, since my first time as a Málaga player in 1999/00.  That time with Peiró was magnificent and helped me to mature.  Then in the second phase, with Tapia, I once again enjoyed football.”

Lastly, ahead of the match on Saturday in A Coruña, the former Málaga and Depor player considers that “with my heart in my hand, I think I’d like to see a draw” and wishes a long career “for both teams in the First Division.”
