Last match of the season ends in defeat (1-0)

Málaga CF lost out to CD Lugo at the Anxo Carro, on matchday 42 of LaLiga SmartBank. A goal from Señé in 78’ sealed victory for Rubén Albés’ men in the final league game of the season.

The last LaLiga Smartbank match for CD Lugo and Málaga CF, with both teams having achieved their objectives. There was a pleasant atmosphere in the run-up to play as the crowd bid farewell to a number of Red and White players. On the pitch, on this warm day in Galicia, there were multiple changes to Pablo Guede’s starting-11: Dani Martín; Ismael, Escassi, Andrés, Víctor Gómez; Kevin, Genaro, Febas, Brandon; Loren and S. Gassama. 

The start of play was even and both teams tried to maintain possession of the ball. The first 10 minutes passed with barely any dangerous chances. Up until the hydration break (30'), Loren, Chris Ramos, Iriome and Kevin tried their luck for their respective teams, but without success. The first half ended without incident.

In the second half, Paulino replaced Kevin on the right wing. As such, Brandon moved over to the left of the Malaguista attack. The first 15 minutes featured opportunities for both teams from the set piece. Various corners provided chances for the locals and the visitors.

An hour into play, Guede made further changes in search of a goal. Brandon and Loren made way for Chavarría and Dani Lorenzo. S. Gassama had the opportunity to strike from the edge of the area after a backwards pass from Chavarría, but his shot went wide. Around minute 70, the Malaguista number ‘22’ took over from Roberto upfront.

During the hydration break, the Anxo Carro honored Pita, Seoane and Iriome, who were substituted by Rubén Albés. Chavarría sent a great cross from Víctor Gómez into the net in minute 76, but the referee, helped by the assistant referee, disallowed it for being offside. Then, during the next play, a local counterattack ended with Señé taking advantage of a pass from Clavería to make it 1-0 in the 78th minute.

The team tried until the end but didn’t manage to surpass Óscar and go level. MCF end the 21/22 season with a defeat, and a total of 45 points in the pot.
