Kilometre 38: Málaga-Mallorca

Málaga CF scored point number 50 in LaLiga SmartBank this season, at home, against the team in second place in the standings.

The 1-1 draw with RCD Mallorca featured several highlights we look back at here in our usual kilometre. Ready, steady go!

Captain Lombán

Deivid, as he’s affectionately known in the dressing room, is once again having a remarkable season. The ‘capi’ opened the scoring by hierarchically converting a penalty to put the lads 1-0 up on the scoreboard. The second goal in 25 league games for the Asturian central defender, who took advantage of Mejías' injury to become a regular fixture in the Blue and White defence.

Mini, long-awaited debut

After numerous appearances in the squad list, Sergio Guerrero ‘Mini’ made his official debut with Málaga CF’s first team. The versatile reserve team captain played the final minutes of the match and is, together with Camacho and Iván Rodríguez, the third player born in the Alameda region of Málaga to wear the Malaguista jersey. Congratulations!

Homegrown, Malagueño flavour

The relevance of native or homegrown players from the Academy is not unusual. Within the starting line-up, as well as Malagueños Joaquín and Escassi, in defence were Juande, Ismael and Benítez. Practically half the team. In addition, three of the five substitutions in the second half were homegrown players. Senior player and now match fit Luis Muñoz, Cristo and the aforementioned Mini.

50 points

Having the lowest budget in the category, an almost new team formed in such little time, the limitations in terms of professional registrations and competing in such a demanding competition. These are just a few of the standout circumstances the team has experienced. Any pro Malaguista would have thought we’d hit such a round figure at this stage, practically guaranteeing another year in the Second Division.
