Javi Jiménez: “I’d like to apologise to everyone”

The Malaguista defender held a press conference following the match in Cartagena. “It was a very difficult night,” he said.

The Blue and White player spoke to the club media after the match at the Municipal Cartagonova. Javi started out summing up the team’s feeling: “It was a very difficult night.”

Javi, who is aware of having been the protagonist of the unfortunate action that led to the expulsion of his teammate Burgos, wanted to assume responsibility for the move: “I want to make it clear that I am not in favour of individualising. In team sports we all have to take charge. However, at this time, and in the situation we’re in, I think that the fairest thing to do is to hold myself totally responsible for the mistake that left us with 10 men, after we’d started the match really well.”

“I’d like to apologise to all my teammates, who are the ones working hard every day. I thank them for their attitude since that mistake that left us a player down. They didn’t lose face at any time, those who were on the bench and those who joined the game. I thank them for their great attitude,” he said.

To end the press conference, Javi said: “Sunday is just around the corner,” and his message to the fans is “that they’re with the team. I know it’s hard to ask for that under these circumstances and the little joy we’re giving them. My mistake marked the fate of the match, for which I take full responsibility. As such, the only thing I ask is that the fans cheer on the team and my teammates on Sunday as, considering the hard work they’ve done today, I think it’s the least they deserve,” he explained.
