Guaro will support the team on their return to La Rosaleda

Málaga CF continues to bring the Blue and White spirit to every corner of the province. For #MálagaDépor, José Luis Puche draws inspiration from Guaro’s Luna Mora Festival.

This Sunday 12th October at 21:00, La Rosaleda will host an exciting match between Málaga CF and RC Deportivo, corresponding to matchday 9 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION. Guaro will take centre stage for the game, with a prominent presence on the official poster and on the captain’s armband.

Guaro is a village made to be remembered. Its steep streets, lined with whitewashed façades and flower-filled balconies, form a corner that has preserved the charm of authenticity. Located in the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the town opens its doors to adventure through trails, mountain routes, and scenic landscapes.

Time has left its mark on the town. Its history dates back to Prehistory, as evidenced by remains found in Ardita, and is enriched by Roman relics in Polvillar and traces of Arab presence in Guaro Viejo. In 1614, thanks to King Felipe IV, it became an independent municipality, and shortly afterwards, it was elevated to the status of a county. Its streets, with a distinct Andalusian flair, still bear the imprint of its Arab splendour.

Its beauty is also reflected in the Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel, built in 1505 on the site of a former mosque and renovated in later centuries. Also notable are the hermitages of San Isidro and Cruz del Puerto, the latter offering spectacular views and housing the revered Cristo de Limpias. The town’s olive oil tradition is showcased at the Centro Cultural Al-Ándalus and its Ethnographic Oil Museum, where a 12th-century Arab olive press is preserved, a testament to the historical importance of olive cultivation and artisanal work in the local heritage.

Guaro’s gastronomy is a tribute to the flavours of the land, with dishes such as almond rabbit, goat stew (caldereta de chivo), and “galipuche”, a local vegetable and omelette stew. Sweet treats include almond cakes, bocaditos, and Christmas roscos, a reflection of a rich pastry tradition linked to the town’s large almond production, which makes Guaro the country’s top producer.

Among its celebrations, none shines brighter than the Luna Mora Festival. Every September, over 25,000 candles light up the streets, recreating the Andalusian legacy and the harmony of cultures through music, parades, and crafts. This unique event attracts thousands of visitors and has become the town’s defining hallmark.

The magic of this festival inspired the captain’s armband and the official poster for the match against RC Deportivo, allowing José Luis Puche to once again leave his mark on the heart of Málaga fans.

Málaga CF is the province!
