Gracia: “We reached 40 points by making a major effort”

The Navarran coach says after the draw with RCD Espanyol there are “still seven exciting matches left.”

A close game

“I think we did a lot of things well.  The rival line-up focused more on defence than in their previous starting line-ups, which meant we knew it wouldn’t be easy to get on the score board or generate many goal chances.  Scoring the goal from a corner gave us more confidence and eased our nerves in defence, as we were waiting for a chance to surprise the rival with a counter-attack.  We had more possession, but weren’t very fluid in the first half, and it wasn’t easy to find space.  In the second half, we had more dominance and control on the pitch.”

Pleased with the point

“The team was very serious, we ran a great risk as time went on, but I think the end of the game should be the mirror of what the team is, showing such enthusiasm to win.  We’re happy with our performance, and the point earned means we can continue to move forward.”

Keep working to secure permanency

“We know that if we have guaranteed permanency, we still must continue gaining points and working with the mentality of giving the same importance to points as the rivals.  After the season we’ve had we don’t want to rely on anyone, we want to focus on our own path.  I hope we finish as high up the table as possible in regard to position, points and objectives, but the most realistic thing to do is fight for the next three points.  I don’t want to be a conformist, but I think talking about Europe isn’t being ambitious.  Being ambitious is giving our all every day and trying to get as far as possible.”

Goal from a penalty

“It’s lucky as we were becoming quite elusive in penalty shoot-outs.  I’m delighted for Cop that he scored, and when the strikers increase their records, as the work they do is admirable.”

Children’s Day

“It’s a joy for me to share these moments with all the children that came here today, and with all the Malaguista fans.  I think they’ll be happy to see their team giving everything they’ve got to achieve victory.”

Team effort

“I believe the team is making a major effort to be where we are now, with 40 points in this situation.  We’ve got seven exciting matches left where we’ll be able to compete in front of our fans in four of them, and have numerous possibilities to improve our numbers.  This is our ambition, but always remaining humble and cautious.”
