Funes: “We were able to stick to the plan”

The Málaga CF coach spoke in a press conference after the 1-1 draw in Valladolid. “Faced with difficulties, we knew how to stand our ground,” he said.

Match analysis

“We have to recognise the difficulty of the opponent on this field. In the final third, we needed to be more precise, especially on the wings and in the attacking third. It’s not easy to come here against a team that makes it very hard to execute what we want to do, and in Alfonso’s action, which creates doubts, to see the behaviours we witnessed. Faced with difficulties, we knew how to stand our ground. At half-time, we asked for three adjustments. We had to be able to show ourselves a little more, be generous, and fortunately, today everything went as we wanted.”

Faithful to the plan

“Winning, drawing… What I take away, more than the point, is that the players have stuck to the plan. The opponent caused us problems, yet they were able to maintain the plan.”

Emotion and boldness

“We focus on the stats, possession, shots… but football has to be full of emotions. And I feel the team is very much alive. A very important part is that they are following the plan because they are feeling it. Alfonso’s mistake is mine, I take responsibility for that. If we want to be bold, we do so with all the consequences. That’s what we want now and for the future.”

Changes

“Our substitution plan wasn’t what it ended up being, but the plan changes. After using the first window, Adri (Niño) tells us he can’t continue. We used that window and managed everything very carefully. These things happen. It was difficult today to finish with all substitutions available.”

Strategy

“This team, Real Valladolid, has one of the best records in LaLiga; it’s no coincidence. A team that leaves three players up front, and for many weeks no one has been able to score against them. It’s very difficult to score against them from a corner.”

Continuity

“We have one guiding principle in the dressing room, everyone will get their opportunity. But no one will play every match. We decided to maintain continuity with the core group because we understood that they had done things well. Now we have three matches in less than eight days, and it would be very healthy for the group if the players rotated in the starting-11. Hopefully, that will happen, because it would speak to the good health of Málaga.”
