Press conference

Funes: “It’s a huge challenge; we want to come out on top and we’re going to play to win”

The Málaga coach spoke at a press conference at La Rosaleda ahead of #CádizMálaga. “It’s a beautiful match and it should be a celebration of Andalusian football,” he said.

Candidate to win in Cádiz

“I already said that we were candidates to win in Cádiz. Cádiz is too; we shouldn’t forget that they spent 15 matchdays in the playoffs, almost double what we did. With a new coach, they have shown solidity and an ability to reach the attacking area. They have players like Suso and Ocampo, very decisive. It’s a beautiful match, it should be a celebration of Andalusian football, and hopefully it will be, so everyone can enjoy it.”

Rival with a new coach

“We’ve seen Sergio manage many times, including with Cádiz. The other day we saw a very solid defensive unit, and significant structural changes in the lineup. The switch of Suso for Antoñito is one of the most notable. These are changes we need to keep very much in mind for this match.”

Special atmosphere

“Cádiz is a very tough opponent to beat. It’s a very special place, I think we haven’t managed to win against Cádiz since 2020. The stands put a lot of pressure on the players, there’s a very special football atmosphere, and withstanding that initial surge could be crucial. Those first few minutes can be very important, they can determine how the match unfolds.”

Away win

“It’s a huge challenge. The step up in quality in this division comes from being able to win away from home. We need to be able to take the ball from Cádiz, who have very talented players, and as visitors, impose ourselves and play to win, so that the opponent and their fans feel it, that we’re going after them. Just like we do here, we need to show that.”

51 points

“Points are a consequence. When you take it game by game, as if each one were the last, the next match is always the most important. I enjoy the moment and the team’s play, and aim for the maximum points possible, and let whatever comes, come.”

‘Legado’ jersey

“I loved it because of the memories it brings me. Raúl brought one this morning that he had kept, and it’s really beautiful. With that current touch, it adds a very interesting nuance. The figure of IlloJuan, who can give a boost almost on a global level, is something very positive.”

‘Siempre Fuerte’ Awards gala

“Players and coaching staff are caught up in the daily whirlwind. I want to congratulate the Foundation for giving visibility to this side of football, which should be more than just entertainment and has all the ingredients for that. Giving exposure to groups that are doing so much for society, this is the ninth gala, seeing that enthusiasm is very rewarding, and we really enjoy it.”
