Málaga’s promotion run comes to an end in Zubieta (2-1)

Héctor Díaz’s side lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad ‘B’ in the promotion playoff to the Primera Federación Iberdrola. The Malaguistas, who were defeated in extra time, will remain in the Segunda Federación for another season.

Sunday afternoon at the Zubieta facilities saw the second leg of the promotion playoff semifinals to the Primera Federación Iberdrola take place in #RealSociedadBMálaga.

Héctor Díaz named the following starting-11: Amor Leigh; Lorena Herrera, Marina, Jeni, Farfán (C); Encarni, Andrea Ríos, Andrea Herrero, Alicia; Arantxa and Futu.

The first half was marked by the dominance of the Real Sociedad reserve side, although clear-cut chances were few and far between on the Zubieta pitch. The most notable moment came in the 33rd minute, when Etxarte found the net for Real Sociedad ‘B’. However, the home side’s number 9 saw her goal ruled out for offside. The match remained goalless at halftime (0-0).

After the restart, Málaga came out with greater attacking intent and were quickly rewarded. In minute 48, Andrea Ríos delivered a free kick into the box that slipped through the home defence and found Futu, who finished at the near post to put MCFF ahead (0-1).

The goal boosted the visitors’ confidence, although Real Sociedad ‘B’ gradually grew back into the game. In the 64th minute, Esteberena levelled the score with a header that beat Amor Leigh (1-1).

Alicia tried her luck with a shot that narrowly missed the right post of the opposition goal, but the 90 minutes came to an end and the tie headed into extra time.

The additional period unfolded in a tightly contested battle, with very few chances in the opening half of extra time. In the second period, Yessenia produced a brilliant individual run in the 110th minute, finishing with a shot that was gathered by Mendiburu.

Just when it seemed the place in the final would be decided by a penalty shootout, Echevarría struck in minute 115 to score the decisive 2-1 winner for Real Sociedad ‘B’.

As such, Málaga CF Femenino, who battled until the very end in Zubieta, bring their participation in the Primera Federación Iberdrola promotion playoff to a close.
