Congratulations Joaquín Peiró!

On this day 80 years ago in Madrid, the coach with the most matches in the history of Málaga Club de Fútbol, Joaquín Peiró was born. Congratulations!

On 29th January 1936, Joaquín Peiró Lucas was born in the Spanish capital.  The ‘galgo del Metropolitano’, a fabulous player who left his mark on Atlético de Madrid and the Spanish national team, and a legendary pioneer in Italian football with Torina, Roma and Inter Milan, where he was European champion, is remembered by Málaga fans for his brilliant career as coach with Málaga CF between 1998 and 2003.

Peiró, who arrived in the 1998/99 season from Badajoz, achieved First Division promotion that same season with anthology football.  The following four seasons, in the footballing elite, Peiró’s Málaga was characterised as a team with great ball skills to the delight of ‘Malaguista’ fans, achieving historic results that will always remain in the memory of every Blue and Whites’ fan.

The Madrid-born manager coached the highest number of games with MCF (224), and always ensured Málaga was in the mid to upper part of the League table, achieving the Club’s only title during the first journey into European football: the Intertoto Cup (2002), which gave access to the UEFA Cup, in which the team reached the quarter finals (2002/03).

  • Spain’s first team (12 matches – 5 goals): His goal against Mexico stands out (1-0) in the victory in the Chile World Cup (4 matches played in World Cup competitions: 2 in Chile’62 and 2 in England’66).
  • B team (5 matches – 5 goals): He scored a hat trick against Italy.
  • Spain’s under-21s (1 match – 0 goals).
