Another point to end the first round (1-1)

It was a draw for Málaga CF and Real Oviedo this evening. Yanis Rahmani and Nahuel scored the goals, a foul was called in the rival area and the locals were down to 10 men as Escassi was sent off.

Same rival, Real Oviedo; same location, La Rosaleda Stadium; but this time it was in LaLiga SmartBank, on matchday 21, following Wednesday’s Cup clash. Both teams refreshed their starting line-ups, with Pellicer only repeating Cristian and Yanis in the 11.

The Malaguistas dominated from the outset, with a strong attacking approach. This electric start led Yanis Rahmani to try his luck after two minutes following play between Chavarría and Caye. Málaga CF’s momentum saw the lads open the scoring in 13’. Cristian Rodríguez launched a short corner from the right to Rahmani, who sought the diagonal to launch a left-footer into the goal defended by Joan Femenías. Following the goal, Real Oviedo took a step forward, taking advantage of the long balls from Blanco Leschuk, and creating numerous occasions up until the half-time whistle, the most promising from Javier Mier.

In the second half, the ‘Carbayones’ went level with a goal by Nahuel Leiva, from a Lucas Ahijado assist. Back to square one as Pellicer’s team attempted to regain control and approach the area. Yanis Rahmani tried with a free kick that deflected to the right, then gameplay turned to the wings as both teams tried to find a finisher. The Malaguistas claimed a penalty half an hour in to the second half as a rival defender intercepted a Joaquín Muñoz pass in the direction of Jairo. After a VAR check, the referee didn’t award the penalty.

The rain started to fall at La Rosaleda, whilst Alexander González made his Blue and White debut in the league competition. The match became complicated with the expulsion of Escassi with a double yellow card in 83’. With a numerical advantage, Oviedo could have taken the lead with a shot from Samuel Obeng. The Martiricos outfit struggled to hold on to the very well-deserved point in the closing stages.

With this draw, Málága CF end the first round of LaLiga SmartBank with 28 points, sitting comfortably in the standings. The next league game is on Saturday 23rd January against Ponferradina, again at La Rosaleda.
