The first few minutes saw some multiple moves for Málaga, but the first great goal opportunity was for Sporting who, despite having an almost clear shot, failed to convert it to put themselves ahead. The Blue and Whites squad had more initiative but the ‘Rojiblancos’ were more comfortable coming out quick on the attack. However, in this way, Málaga had a great opportunity with Eliseu running 50 metres up the wing and then shooting, obliging Juan Pablo to make a powerful save.
From that move onwards, the opportunities and attacks were forthcoming for Manuel Pellegrini’s men who were looking to impose their quality and better play by alternating between combinative and individual moves from the likes of the previously mentioned Eliseu, as well as Isco and Cazorla. But it was Sporting who managed to advance the scoreboard thanks to a goal by defender Gálvez who delivered after a pass from Cases. It was minute 35 and 1-0, and Málaga were determined to turn the game around, something they nearly achieved with a frontal shot by French-born Toulalan. With lots of stoppages in play in the last few minutes of this half, the half time whistle blew with a minute of extra time added and a minimum advantage for the locals.
The second half started without changes in either team and with an intense Málaga in attack. Van Nistelrooy as well as Cazorla had their opportunities, as did Isco and Mathijsen, who was unable to score after a pass from the Benalmádena player. For their part, Sporting continued with their waiting game, coming out fast and creating chances, when they had them, to shake Málaga’s domination as they tried to widen the gap on the scoreboard further.
Málaga had up to five corners in their favour, but without any real luck. Eliseu didn’t have much luck either after taking a great shot from the right towards Juan Pablo’s goal.
An hour in and Sporting shut down at the back defending some great attack moves from Málaga who were trying from both flanks and with moves in the centre, such as Cazorla’s one, that was the subject of a disputed action in Sporting’s area that was not understood by the match’s referee.
With Diego Buonanotte coming on – for Eliseu – Málaga were trying to free themselves from the double line of five planted by Sporting de Gijón and they almost got there when they combined the Argentinean with Van Nistelrooy who was just about to score but didn’t as it was under the goal line.
With all the changes made in both teams, Sporting got a second wind with a corner and various moves around Caballero’s area, forcing him to save another shot that could’ve easily been another goal.
But Málaga’s push throughout the entire match paid off in minute 87 when Ruud Van Nistelrooy secured a draw with a frontal shot from Sporting’s area; it was impossible for Juan Pablo to stop. Two minutes remained plus the extra time and Málaga were drawing one all, when the home side’s Trejo, who had come on in the second half, hooked a volley that flew past Willy Caballero into the Malaguista net.
In the end a defeat for Málaga Clib de Fútbol by two goals to one, in a match that was determined in its final few minutes and which leaves Málaga with the same 25 points and in 25th position in the BBVA League.
