A point of faith (2-2)

Málaga CF secured a draw against CD Lugo with the Blue and Whites down to 10 men for more than 35 minutes of play. The home side came back from 0-2 thanks to a Juande brace (70’ and 88’).

The Malaguistas welcomed Lugo to La Rosaleda Stadium on matchday 15 of Liga SmartBank. The team arrived at this game with a point between them, 21 for the Blue and Whites and 20 for the visitors.

Pellicer, who returned to the dugout following a two-match ban, introduced five changes compared to the team that won at Montilivi. Juande and Lombán were in midfield, Ramón returned to the engine room, whilst Jairo and Caye formed part of the attacking trio.

On the pitch, both sides struggled to gain control of the ball, with the balance tipping in the Blue and Whites’ favour. However, it was Lugo that opened the scoring. Hugo Rama surprised everyone with a powerful shot from in front of the target, which Dani Barrio could do little to prevent (0-1, 26’).

Despite the goal, the locals attempted to reach the rival area, but CD Lugo increased their lead in minute 40. Ferrao Venancio made the most of a rebound to score the 0-2. The score remained the same at half-time.

Pellicer introduced a double substitution in the second half, bringing on Joaquín Muñoz and Pablo Chavarría with the clear intention of stepping up the attack. However, the referee showed Blue and White player Caye Quintana the red card, leaving the home side with 10 men in minute 56, with over 35 minutes remaining.

Everything appeared to go against the locals, but neither trailing on the scoreboard or being a man down daunted MCF who didn’t stop in their attempts to get a goal. It was Juande who narrowed the gap from the heart of the area following an impeccable assist from Joaquín Muñoz, in the 70th minute (1-2).

The goal gave the Malaguistas the hope they needed to continue on in their quest to go level. The opportunities kept on coming in the final stages of play, and the locals got their reward. It was Juande who again beat the rival keeper with a header to take the match level (2-2, 88’).

The team gave their all in the closing stages, but the scoreboard stayed the same. At the final whistle, the teams shared the points from a duel where Málaga showed courage and heart.
