A journey ‘From Los Baños del Carmen to La Rosaleda’

The MCF Foundation organised a round table discussion on Thursday, within La Rosaleda’s 75th Anniversary celebrations.

‘From Los Baños del Carmen to La Rosaleda’, a discussion chaired by journalist, Antonio Guadamuro, with the participation of former Malaguista players, Abdullah Ben Barek, Pepillo Benítez, José Álvarez and Bernardi, as well as member of the MCF Foundation’s history department, Domingo Muñoz.

Blue and Whites’ history told first hand by iconic characters from the Málaga entity,  from a privileged location, Los Baños del Carmen, who hosted the first team’s stadium until September 1941, when the first match was played at La Rosaleda.

Domingo Muñoz, a historian from the MCF Foundation

“We’re in Los Baños del Carmen.  This privileged location had a field of play, from 1922 until 1941, on which different Málaga teams played.  Due to its proximity to the sea, on days when there was a heavy swell, it came as no surprise if the goalkeeper got wet!”

Bernardi, ex Málaga player

“I went to the mountain and watched the game from there.  When it ended, I went down to see players such as Tomasín, Chales, Teo and Casanova.  I remember one match we played against Real Madrid, and we won by 3-1.  I scored two goals and they carried me home.”

Ben Barek, Málaga Club adviser

“There are so many memories, but I must talk about mine at La Rosaleda.  The famous goal when I made a mistake and scored from the corner.  Since then, every match we played at La Rosaleda and there was a corner, everyone encouraged me to try.  La Rosaleda is now a first-rate pitch.  At that time, the fans made it a very good stadium.  The memories are wonderful.”

José Álvarez, ex Málaga player

“I recall a Copa del Rey match against Rayo.  I scored a goal that I’ll never forget.  It started in midfield, and I dribbled past three or four defenders to put the ball in the net.”
