‘Chory’ Castro signs to Málaga CF

Uruguayan-born left-winger Gonzalo ‘Chory’ Castro is joining Málaga CF from Real Sociedad for the remainder of this season and the next two.

‘Chory’ Castro arrived in Málaga this morning and successfully passed the routine medical at Clínicas Rincón-La Rosaleda.  Tomorrow, Thursday at 1 p.m., the new signing, who has an EU passport, will be officially presented as a ‘Malaguista’ player in the Juan Cortés press room at La Rosaleda stadium.

Career / Characteristics

- Nacional de Montevideo was the first team Castro played for on a professional level, winning three national championships between 2002 and 2007.  His quality as an attacker on the left wing led to his debut with Uruguay’s first team at just 20 years of age.  The friendly against Spain, held in Gijón (17/08/2005) ended in a 2-0 win for Luis Aragonés’ ‘La Roja’.  ‘Chory’, who was in the starting-11 and played for 45 minutes, coincided with former ‘Malaguista’, ‘Chengue’ Morales in this match (another ex-Blue and Whites’ player, OJ Morales was in action in the second half.)

- In 2007 Gonzalo Castro joined European football, developing his career with two teams: RCD Mallorca and Real Sociedad de Fútbol.  He stayed on the Balearic Islands for five seasons in the First Division (2007-12), taking part in 131 LaLiga matches (23 goals) and 17 Copa del Rey games (4 goals).  His speed and excellent ball work made him one of the standout players on this team, also assisting in numerous goals.  In the 2012/13 season he joined Real Sociedad, playing 115 matches to date (13 goals and 12 assists) between the League, Copa del Rey, UEFA Europa League and Champions League.

- In total, during his time in Mallorca and San Sebastián, he took part in 253 matches in all competitions, scoring 39 goals and around 40 assists.  With Uruguay he played five friendly games between 2005 and 2013, and was pre-selected by coach, Óscar Tabarez for the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
