Willy Caballero: “I’m not working much, and that’s a good sign”

Málaga CF’s goalkeeper, Willy Caballero, spoke to the media this afternoon in the Ciudad de Málaga stadium press room. The Argentinean-Spanish player, who celebrates his 30th birthday today, is the current ‘Zamora’ in the BBVA league.

Willy’s statements:

(Personal moment). “I’d be the same if we were further down.  I’m comforted to know that we’re all working well and that we’re doing well on the table.  The important thing is that we keep on getting three on three, and if that’s by the other team not scoring, so much the better for everyone and the secure defence.  It’s a credit to everyone that we’re getting some important points. The team’s playing well and we’re not even creating.  I’m not working much, and that’s a good sign. Unbeaten record? I try not to think about it too much and carry on as normal.  But if they score goals the whole team works.

(Targets). “I was hoping that things worked out well for me and the team this year and  I’ve given myself a few new targets, as have all the players, and I hope that we can achieve our aims little by little.  That I don’t allow goals in is very important.  I hope to play for the whole season, which I’ve never done in Spain, and to concede as few goals possible and to get into European positions.  Málaga has suffered quite enough over the last few years and now this year it’s our turn, and the turn of the whole city.”

(Ambition). “We want to go and seek out games, they like us and that means that they respect us.  But not all games are going to the same.  Our opponents also play and we have to know how to bend to that.  We’ve got to make the effort, using our quality players, to create chances, and the important thing is to carry on adding up the points so the team doesn’t lose out."

(Getafe). “A point is good, but it would be better to walk away with the three points.  When you don’t win, it’s important not to lose.  If we’re used to that it means that the team is full of desire and ambition.  Getafe’s coming to win, we know the players they have, and I know the manager as I was with him in Elche, but the important thing is what we have between ourselves.  We know the weapons they have, but if we continue on the same level and the same defensive consistency, it’ll be a great game for us.”

(Group and Argentina).  The team lunch?  Last year it was one of the things that united the group the most.  It’s vital that you bond and have some good times together. National side?  I have to dedicate myself to my own things.  The important thing is to play each weekend and do the best I can.  I’m playing in an important team in the First Division and it’s in my reach to do it well.”
