The reunion of the ‘Giants of Málaga Basketball’

The Club Deportivo Málaga Basketball players took part in an event at Real Club Mediterráneo, as part of the presentation of the book by the MCF Foundation and the Fundación Málaga.

The ‘Giants of Málaga Basketball’ book again took centre stage on Tuesday afternoon at Real Club Mediterráneo, at an event held in the Salón de la Rosa de los Vientos featuring 12 players from the historic Club Deportivo Málaga Basketball team.

The event, which kicked off with a welcome greeting from Carmen Urbaneja, a Cultural member of Real Club Mediterráneo, was moderated by Lucas Rodríguez, MCF Foundation coordinator, who orchestrated the three blocks of the event, with four former CD Málaga basketball players featured in each one.

Always attentive to the anecdotes of the players were José María Muñoz, Málaga CF’s judicial administrator, and Basti from the Málaga CF Foundation, representatives from the Fundación Málaga, as well as the rest of the guests linked to those historical moments of basketball in our city.

The colloquium, which lasted just over an hour, covered the passages of the ‘Giants of Malaga Basketball’ book in three blocks: the creation of CD Málaga, the consolidation of the team and the final stage.

A reunion of players who made history, in a historical environment such as the Real Club Mediterráneo.

The 'Giants of Malaga Basketball' book, which those attending yesterday's event could acquire, can be purchased at the official La Rosaleda store for €14,95, or online for €15,95, including the €1 online management charge. Profits will go towards the MCF Foundation’s social work.

Statements by Lucas Rodríguez (MCF Foundation Coordinator)

“This is an event within the promotion of the 'Giants of Malaga Basketball' book, in recognition of the players and the significance of that time for Málaga basketball. Real Club Mediterráneo opened its doors to us, and we’re delighted. The protagonists are the players themselves. We wanted them to tell their experiences first-hand and they were the ones who narrated those anecdotes from those historic seasons for basketball. We enjoyed being part of that adventure with the Fundación Málaga by releasing a book that is a bible of basketball and Málaga sport. It’s a very significant alliance with one of the most important cultural entities in Málaga, if not the most important”.

Statements by Carmen Urbaneja (Cultural Voice of Real Club Mediterráneo)

“It’s a historical link with Málaga CF and it is an honour to be part of this tribute. Everything related to sport and its promotion, participating in the sporting life of Málaga is very important for our Club”.

Statements by Paco Llorca (Former CD Málaga Basketball player)

“Many years ago, in the 60s, when we started with CD Málaga, we were delighted that the foundations of Málaga basketball were known. We haven’t seen each other for two years and we couldn’t wait to hug each other a little. We had such a great friendship, we spent many hours together. We were young and had so much fun and didn’t mind going on the long journeys. Those roads driving up the Málaga mountains on the bus and the trucks with the fish… We went to Granada to play, stopping off in Colmenar and Loja, and it was a four or five-hour journey”.
