Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “For me Málaga CF is everything”

The president of the Club and the adviser Sheikh Nayef Al Thani review the past, past and future of the club at the team’s base in Holland.

Málaga CF, a feeling

Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “For me, Málaga CF is everything. It’s not just a team, it’s my life. Everyone knows that. This year I hope that we’re in the high end of LaLiga. We’re going to work hard, doing a good job as a team, as a family. And we will have to see how we start the season to check that out.”

Problems in the past

Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “There were problems in the past; I don’t want to mention any names. They told us everything was going ok and that there were no problems, but over the last two years we managed to get information about the internal problems within the club. Thank God we have managed to solve them and now we’re starting over. Now I can say we’re starting from scratch and we’re really excited about the future.”

Exciting future

Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “As I’ve said before, we’re excited about being amongst the best clubs. What is true is that we don’t want to take a massive step forward and then fall down again. We’ve learned from the mistakes and we’ll now see what happens in the future. As I said before, we’re building from scratch, and we’ve started as if we were returning to 2010 and building a team that, if it is God’s way, will be in the Champions or Europa League – why not? We can do these things with our team and our manager. There’s a new strategy and there’s lots of things we can do.”

Málaga CF is not for sale

Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “I can’t give names, but in the last few years, I received by email some figures that you couldn’t even believ; very high indeed. And I responded to all of them to say that Málaga CF is not for sale. When someone brings up this subject, I feel as though someone has put a knife in my heart. Sheikh Nayef and all my family know this well.

Sheikh Nayef Al Thani: “Málaga CF is part of his heart, that’s how he feels. I can guarantee that 100%.”

Málaga, his home

Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “I am going to stay in Málaga. Perhaps we will have to return to Qatar towards the end of November…”

Sheikh Nayef Al Thani: “Over the next few years he is going to stay in Málaga, but one never knows if at one point you have to return for an emergency. We have other businesses there, also our family, and something could crop up at any moment, but we hope this won’t happen.

He feels at home in Málaga.

Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani: “I feel very comfortable there. And also with the team, in the end we’re like a family. We have to see each other every day, we need to know what they do, what they need and be able to help them. It’s very important for me to be with them.”
