Shared points at La Rosaleda (1-1)

All square for Málaga CF and Extremadura UD on matchday 34 of the league competition. The Malaguista goal from Sadiku and Zarfino for the visitors sealed the result.

The second match held at La Rosaleda behind closed doors since the competition resumed. An unrecognisable Blue and White temple that was missing its best asset, the fans. However, the characteristic chants of support could be heard through the speakers which helped in part to alleviate the absence of the fans.

Both Málaga and Extremadura sought to dominate possession in the wide area, but it was the Blue and Whites who made more approaches to the rival goal. Hicham and Juanpi came very close to opening the scoring, missing out on glory by mere centimetres.

It was in minute 29 when Sadiku put the Malaguistas in front. The number ‘9’ made a forceful finish in the heart of the area following an excellent pass from Tete on the left. The ball slammed into the back of the net making an unrecognisable sound in football that is accustomed to hearing euphoria in the stands (1-0).

With a sense of relief following the goal, the locals went all out for the second. Juanpi again came within touching distance in 39’; the left-back slid in between the defenders on the diagonal from the right wing, and once in the ideal position, launched a powerful shot that grazed the post.

With four minutes remaining until half-time, Nono for the visitors found himself in a promising position following a cross that sailed a few metres past the Malaguista goal. He adjusted the shot to the top right-hand corner, but Munir responded with a superb save, sending the clear opportunity to a corner. With Málaga 1-0 in front, the ref signalled half-time.

The initial stages of the second half kicked off with a very similar tone to the first. Dominance by the Blue and Whites and greater activity in the visitors’ half. Pellicer’s men made numerous approaches to the goal; the clearest was a shot from Renato Santos that hit the near post a minute after he joined the game in substitution of Hicham (59’). Rival keeper, Casto managed to deflect the attempt. Málaga looked set to increase their advantage when the rival went level. On the exit of a corner, in 64’, Extremadura equalised with a header from Zarfino (1-1) and it was back to square one.

The minutes began to weigh, and the balance of play became more even. The opportunities decreased but didn’t disappear altogether. The rival tried to surprise the keeper with a header towards the target in 81’, but Munir again made a sublime save.

The Malaguistas went all out on the attack. Just before the final whistle (89’), they sought the winning goal with a dangerous free kick, but lacked finish.

The final result was a 1-1 draw and shared points between both teams.
