The Malaguista striker surpasses Quini, and with 285 goals scored between the First and Second Divisions, becomes the all-time national ‘pichichi’. A legend.
Following his express brace in just 45 minutes last night at La Rosaleda against Real Zaragoza, Rubén Castro has inscribed his name in gold in the books of Spanish football in terms of goalscoring.
This season, the ‘pichichi’ – with seven goals - has already made national history, having surpassed Quini with 285 goals in his career between the First and Second Divisions. Ahead, Leo Messi (474) and Cristiano Ronaldo (311), the great dominators of world football in the 21st century.
In addition, Rubén is very close to breaking another record in the silver division. No more and no less than the top scorer in the history of the Second Division. Nino, leader of the classification, scored 194 goals. Castro, with 192, is only two away from matching it, three from surpassing it, and eight away from reaching 200 in the now known Liga SmartBank.
The Malaguista number '24' could also beat the man from Almeria in matches played between the First and Second Divisions. Nino played 709 and up to now Rubén has accumulated 703, putting him in second place. Rubén Castro is the leader in the total number of seasons between First and Second, with 23, ahead of Robert (22) and former Malaguista Joaquín (21).
The player from the Canary Islands is omnipresent in numerous Second Division goalscoring statistics. He tops sections such as the oldest player to score (41 years), the most braces (36) and the most goals from the penalty spot (35).
Reverting back to his record of 285 goals, 93 were in the First Division and the aforementioned 192 in the Second Division. His best campaign in the elite was in 15/16, scoring 19 goals with Real Betis Balompié. In the silver division, his record was 31 goals in 14/15 also with the Green and Whites. He has been Second Division ‘pichichi’ twice, in the aforementioned season and in 03/04 with UD Las Palmas (22 goals).
Endless goalscoring records that make Rubén Castro Martín an absolute legend of Spanish football. Keep breaking records as a Malaguista, 'killer'!
