Málaga Club de Fútbol will take on CD Tenerife at La Rosaleda on Friday 21st February at 20:30. This thrilling match, part of matchday 28 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, will feature Periana as a central element in the match poster design and on the Blue and White captain's armband.
Periana is a hidden paradise where the mountains unfold in gentle waves, interrupted only by ravines descending to the Guaro River. In its valleys, olive groves blend with fruit orchards and vegetable gardens, painting the landscape in warm hues. From Puerto del Sol, the views are unforgettable, with mountains embracing the horizon. Beneath the land, at the bottom of the Viñuela Reservoir, lie remnants of an ancient past, as if the water holds secrets yet to be revealed.
With a history dating back to the Lower Paleolithic, the town was home to ancient settlements, such as those found at Cerro de Alcolea. During the Arab period, it was a small farmhouse community, and in the 18th century, it began to take shape as a village after its hermitage was converted into a church. Although the 1884 earthquake devastated the area, aid from Alfonso XII allowed for its reconstruction. Today, Periana is known for its peach cultivation, verdial olive oil, and tourism appeal. A local legend tells that its name originated from the union of the surnames Pereiro and Santana.
Periana offers a unique panorama, with its viewpoint showcasing the majesty of the Axarquía region. The Church of San Isidro, a symbol of recovery after the earthquake, is just one of the gems that adorn this charming town. The lively Plaza de la Fuente and the old washhouse, a silent witness to generations past, reflect the town’s character. Additionally, the Baños de Vilo, renowned for their healing waters, remain a haven of well-being.
The local cuisine is a delight for food lovers. From gazpachuelo to migas, every bite is enhanced by the finest verdial olive oil. Roscos de vino and tortas de aceite provide the perfect sweet touch. And for breakfast, the classic “hoyo” of olive oil and cod, paired with café de puchero, is a must-try.
The town’s festivals are the perfect moments to enjoy the simple joys of life. Día del Aceite Verdial, held just after Easter, offers a unique experience with tastings, exhibitions, and activities celebrating extra virgin olive oil. On 15th May, San Isidro Labrador takes centre stage, with an emotional procession and a Romería through the fields, where locals give thanks for the harvest and pray for a prosperous future.
José Luis Puche, with his incomparable skill, brings to life the captain’s armband and the poster announcing the match against CD Tenerife. His art, filled with the essence of Málaga's corners, turns each design into a true ode to our land.
In this piece, Puche immerses us in the stillness of the Baños de Vilo, where the thermal waters of Periana, rich in history and healing properties, seem to come alive with each stroke. With a delicate style, the artist transforms the landscape into a sanctuary of well-being, evoking the harmony between nature and healing.
