Pellicer: “We’re happy to make the fans happy”

The Málaga CF coach appeared in the Enrique Navarro - Nueva Condomina press room following the victory against Real Murcia. “We needed a match like this, we gave a great performance, and the fans wanted a victory here,” he said.

Victory analysis

“It was a game of details. I remain with the fact that in the first minute we conceded a goal yet we continued to insist. We had to do what we did at the beginning of the season, and it was with set pieces, because we lacked the other football. We had control in the first half, and in the second half scoring the second goal gave us much more peace of mind, the rival became nervous and we knew how to handle them. We are two teams with a lot of history behind us, a lot of fans, we have to have empathy with the situations and we were comfortable on the pitch. I congratulate the boys for their work and now the focus is on the Sanluqueño game, let the players celebrate the win. I’m very happy with the work, we showed what we’ve been doing in training, and now we have to keep doing the same. There is another match context coming up and another opponent profile, but we have managed the technical-tactical and knowing where we could hurt them. I’m happy for the lads for making the fans happy. We had 400-500 here cheering us on. We’ll keep our feet on the ground and keep moving forward. There’s a long way to go.”

Importance of the win

“We needed a match like this but we also need it at home because of the last three, which didn’t go as we wanted. Away from home we feel comfortable, we manage the match stats well. We played well and must continue to do so. The fans wanted a victory, especially here, against a great rival despite the difference in result. They are one of the best rivals, although not currently in their best situation, but they’ll return to winning ways due to the profile of the players and coach.”

Keys to the comeback

“There was no change. The difference after conceding the goal, last week the nerves set in and we didn't feel comfortable. Today beyond the goal, we showed attitude, made the most of several mechanisms, having two wingers with Kevin with more width and a fullback more inside, so that the ball reached him faster. And on the inside, seeking Dani Lorenzo to appear. We left Dioni and David Larrubia where they were. Beyond the goal we conceded in the first play, it was a strong blow, but we went level, they continued to pile the pressure on and the first half was very even. In the second half, after the second goal we knew how to have the ball and focus on vertical play. Now we’re concentrating on next week's game in front of our fans and hopefully we we’ll perform as well as we did today.”

Injured players and a complete match

“We’ll see how Nelson is after sustaining injury to his collarbone; with Kevin it was a strain and we planned to take him off. Due to the result, the scenario, the profile of the rival, it was the most complete match. The difference in this match is the goal, we knew how to deal with the blow that Murcia gave us. Murillo's action in the second half gave us peace of mind and changed the context of the game by playing with the rival's anxiety. There were no interventions from Alfonso, nor any sensation. The game was about being able to take advantage of the spaces, which we won’t find in the home game, where we will have to create them and know how to make the most of them.”

Debut of the MCF Foundation’s Ciudad Deportiva

“What better inauguration than with this victory. Arriaza, who was with the reserve team yesterday, had to travel, the appearance of Cordero, that of Murillo, David, Dani Sánchez, Dani Lorenzo, who scored, Roberto who scored…. Tomorrow is a very important step for Málaga CF and also for the city. And this year the homegrown players have to take advantage of it. I know what it's like to train in the midfield with the youth players. Hopefully parents and children will go and feel the sense of belonging. There will be no better place for the Malagueño player to grow than in this Ciudad Deportiva that will be inaugurated tomorrow. It’s a step forward for everyone from Málaga, there is a lot of talent here. If players have arrived within the current conditions, imagine now with those facilities and that quality of training. For all the parents, children and coaches, it’s as if we’ve won the lottery. Many teams have it and it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen, we have been talking about it for many years. It’s the best news along with this victory and with so many homegrown players.”
